Jets dumping Tim Boyle, signing Brett Rypien in quarterback shuffle

Too bad the Jets aren’t getting Mark Rypien, a former Super Bowl MVP, in his prime.

Instead, they signed his nephew Brett Rypien on Tuesday after waiving quarterback Tim Boyle.

So, the Boyle “era” as Jets starting quarterback ended after just two starts, the last being Sunday’s 13-8 loss to the Falcons during which he was benched in the fourth quarter.

Rypien, 27, was signed off the Seahawks’ practice squad.

He started one game for the Rams in place of starter Matthew Stafford this season, losing to the Packers, 20-3, on Nov. 5.

He was cut by the Rams and was signed to the Seattle practice squad on Nov. 10.

Rypien has started four career games, going 2-2, while throwing for 950 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions. One of those starts came for the Broncos against the Jets in 2022, a 16-9 Denver loss.

After Aaron Rodgers ruptured his left Achilles in the Sept. 11 season opener, the Jets tried to sign Rypien. But on Sept. 13, Rypien was promoted by the Rams from their practice squad to the active roster, making him unavailable.

Rypien has a connection to Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, having played under him last season with Denver when Hackett was the Broncos’ head coach.

The Jets, of course, wish they were getting Mark Rypien, the former Super Bowl MVP for the then Washington Redskins who in his prime compiled a 47-31 record while throwing 115 TD passes and 18,473 yards.

Boyle, who had ties to Rodgers and Hackett at Green Bay, is the first of the Rodgers-connected players to be waived from the team.

Receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb have seen their roles drastically reduced.

Lazard was supposed to be the No. 2 receiver opposite Garrett Wilson and was benched two games ago. Cobb has become a weekly healthy scratch.

In two starts, Boyle completed 41 of 63 passes for 327 yards, one TD and three INTs.

One of the picks was the infamous “Fail Mary” against the Dolphins two weeks ago — a Hail Mary at the end of the first half that was returned 99 yards for a touchdown.

Jets coach Robert Saleh benched Boyle for Trevor Siemian in the fourth quarter last Sunday after Boyle missed too many open receivers.

On Monday, Saleh said Boyle did “some good things,” but added, “At the end of the day, we’ve got to score points, we got to find something to get the ball in the end zone.”

The Jets (4-8) have scored only 45 points during their current five-game losing streak.
