作家蔡咏梅所著《周恩来的秘密情感世界》于周三（12月30日）在香港出版，书中指出中国开国元勋、前总理周恩来“是同性恋”。
蔡咏梅接受BBC中文网采访时说，周恩来是“在当年中国社会及共产党阵营对同性恋的迫害下的‘悲剧人物’。”她认为“周恩来是同志”这一点，能够解释历来研究者对周恩来“难以解答的谜题”，包括他几乎零绯闻的婚姻、投身革命的原因，以及他在革命工作上的狂热与对毛泽东的“恐惧”。
蔡咏梅历时三年，查阅已出版的公开资料，推论出周恩来可能对小他两岁的学弟李福景有同性恋情谊。她认为最有力的证据，是周恩来在1918年留学日本那一年中所写的私密日记。这本《周恩来旅日日记》在1998年纪念周恩来百年诞辰出版。
“披露出来之后对中国的同性恋的权益会是正面的效应。” 蔡咏梅这么看待她的著作。BBC中文网记者询问她是否会担心书出版之后，她与家人受到迫害？蔡咏梅认为不会，“因为写的都是有根有据的，没有造假、没有造谣。”她说她写的是几乎一百年前的“历史”，对于中共当代政权应该不会有太大影响。
同志运动
北京促进妇女权利和性别平等团体“女权之声”成员熊婧对BBC中文网表示，她认为“周恩来是同性恋者”这件事的真实与否，并不会对中国现在同性恋群体的生活带来实质上的改变。一来“书肯定在中国出不了”，而她认为更重要的是：“性少数应得的权利不需要通过认证某个名人是同性恋而获得合法性。
“中国官方对同性恋的态度是非常暧昧的。”熊婧说。“如果能出一个真的能保障同志权益的文件或政策，才是一个进步。”
英国诺丁汉大学中国政策研究所学者曾锐生向BBC说，他没有读过蔡咏梅的新书，因此不能对书中内容的可信度下评论。但他表示，如果此事为真，“将对现今中国的同性恋团体与同志历史产生重大影响。”
“慧弟”李福景
蔡咏梅指出，周恩来的恋爱对象是和他家有世交渊源的李福景。周恩来在15岁时与李福景相识。李福景，字新慧，两人在南开学堂（现称南开中学）同窗两年，有半年多的时间住在同一间宿舍。
周恩来在日记第一篇即表明写日记的目的是要为自己“留个纪念”，因此蔡咏梅认为日记中的周恩来“很真实、很有人性”。
蔡咏梅研究周恩来一年份的日记，发现他感受到“情”与情带来的烦恼。并且在2月9日中写到：“恋爱是由情生出来的。不分男女，不分万物，凡一方面发出情来，那一方能感应的，这就可以算作恋爱。”周恩来否定夫妻关系之间有爱情成份，认为夫妻只是为了“组织家庭、留传人种”。日记中也能解读出他的“不婚主义”。
周恩来原本期待李福景毕业后，能到日本一起继续读书，但在8月得知李福景转往香港求学后，蔡咏梅观察到周恩来“情绪崩溃”，日记结构突然变得散乱，甚至只得寥寥数语。而在日记中周恩来以“吾爱友”、“吾慧弟”来称呼李福景，蔡咏梅认为这是周恩来与李福景交情亲密的证据之一。
“同志情”与革命之路
蔡咏梅认为原本认同温和的中间路线，且对封建的原生家庭怀有深厚情感的周恩来，会加入共产党成为革命先锋，“主要是性倾向得不到社会认同”，她指周恩来“在与李福景关系破裂后，思想就突然变得激进。”
1920年，留学日本不顺利的周恩来，与放弃香港学业的李福景，两人以“勤工俭学”的名义赴法国，但目的是在英国读书。蔡咏梅写到，李福景成功在英国入学，但周恩来没能留下，这是周恩来希望的再次破灭。
周恩来转赴法国期间，受到共产国际资助，1921年在法国加入中国共产党。1923年，他突然从法国寄信向邓颖超求婚。邓颖超是周恩来在中学时代学运团体“觉悟社”的社友，不过连邓颖超自己也曾表示，对周恩来突然的追求感到很意外。
蔡咏梅形容周恩来夫妇是“相敬如宾”但如“空壳一般”的夫妻。周恩来婚后积极投身共产党工作，鲜少有两人时间。从邓颖超的回忆录和其他史料中看来，周恩来并没有对邓颖超有“爱情”的表现。
“证据支持”？
蔡咏梅认为，周恩来身为在毛泽东主政时期实际享有权力，甚至在形象、威望上超越毛泽东的人物，对毛泽东的态度却是“卑躬屈膝、逆来顺受”，逻辑上难以解释。
“那是因为周恩来有个秘密”，蔡咏梅说。周恩来对毛泽东怀有恐惧，深怕毛泽东知道自己是同志，因为同性恋在当时的共产党会被视为犯下“流氓罪”。蔡咏梅认为，这是解开重视自我形象的周恩来，对毛泽东采顺从态度的秘密钥匙。

写作动机

她认为这些公开资料中“暗藏秘密”，却一直没有研究人员发现的原因有三个层面，一是周恩来自己极力掩饰，二是中共官方对周恩来“圣人形象”的维护，三是中国民间社会“对同性恋知识的缺乏”，因此没有往这方面研究的想法。
